eLearning & Courses

Each long-form course below showcases a variety of learning strategies and media

Telemedicine Solutions (Course Module 5 of 7)

  • After creating a successful, introductory course on the elements of decentralized clinal trials, my employer saw the need to educate site users on the company’s solutions. By conducting interviews with site personnel, trial participants, advocates, and other subject matter experts, knowledge & operational skill gaps were identified. A large, multi-module course was designed around the needs of salient personas, with an emphasis on delivering a high quality, interactive, and immersive experience. The goal of the course is that learners come away with the ability to summarize the features, best practices, and workflow of the application and communicate with study designers how it should be incorporated.

  • The 5 main modules run from 45 - 75 minute, along with an introductory and concluding module. Via lessons, slides, audio & video, each module focuses on a different solution and is divided into 4 common sections:

    • Context: industry history, vocabulary, background knowledge, traditional challenges

    • Company Solution: navigation, features, guided tour, simulation

    • Best Practices: user tips, support, regulatory features, locale & languages

    • Knowledge Check: multiple choice, true & false, scenarios, simulations

Each knowledge check contains instant feedback and a concomitant review section if not initially passed. Completing all modules results in a certification and, via integration with Credly, allows an achievement badge to be displayed on social media.

  • From post-course survey: ”As a sponsor, this course gave me a solid understanding of capabilities and workflows of each [application] that I can take back to our designers.”

    - L, CRO

” I enjoyed the History of Telemedicine” video and learned a lot! I came away with strong sense of how to to best use this tool and integrate it with our protocol.”

LA Confidential Foodie Expedition (Map #1)

  • A food tourism start-up approached me seeking training for their sales staff, called “concierges.” Each concierge was tasked with helping prospective tourists build itineraries that allowed them to both optimize the tourist’s time and provide them with rich, iconic, and novel dining experiences in the LA area. After discussions with stakeholders, subject matter experts in the tourism and restaurant industry, and prospective clients, a series of interactive maps was decided upon as the main medium to deliver concierge training and enrichment. The goal of the course is to help learners build a strong foundation of the historic and iconic LA restaurant scene, be able to explain and discuss it with clients, and to synthesize the information into unique itineraries.

  • The 10 interactive maps feature markers showing the relative locations of 5 - 10 notable restaurants. When the learner clicks on a restaurant, they are presented with an introductory video, and then a menu containing 5 sections:

    • Founding: Images and history of the restaurant’s founding & people involved

•Ambience/Style: description & images of the atmosphere & restaurant design

•Menu: a general description of the fare, along with a full menu

•Specialties: a pop up showing names,, images and descriptions of specials

    •Location: a pop-up showing a detailed map, street address & phone number

This is followed by a menu offering videos about Celebrity lore, special aspects, and trivia about the restaurant, ending with an interactive knowledge check and the awarding of a badge. When all the badges on the map are earned, the learner then completes branching scenarios that allow them to practice taking calls from and creating itineraries based on customer preferences.

  • From post-course surveys:

”This was more fun and informative than it had a right to be! I know some things about LA eateries, but the amount of new information I learned was impressive.”

    - B, Chef & Investor

”After a majority of the staff were trained, our lead calls went 40% longer. Onboarding is now more efficient, effective, and measureable.”

Inclusive Language for the Workplace

  • A community food bank had noticed that both their staff and volunteers could benefit from greater inclusive language skills. I was approached to create an online Rise course that would provide both and introduction to and practice in using Inclusive language. The goal of the course would be for learners to establish a foundation in the skill, develop it over time, and demonstrate fluency on a daily basis when working directly with the public.

Luckily, I have had training in using inclusive language and a solid network of subject matter experts from which to draw on for their guidance.

A script was written and reviewed by two SMEs and the manager of the food bank. It was then developed in Articulate Rise and hosted in Latitude LMS, where staff and volunteers were able to access it.

  • The course begins with a scenario that presents a problem where someone is attempting to understand why an interaction with a customer didn’t go well.

Inclusive and exclusive language are then demonstrated and defined via a comic, interactive cards, and a video. A knowledge check then gives learners a chance to practice their understanding by sorting examples of inclusive and exclusive language.

The skill is then broken down by examining the 6 principles of inclusive language, which is practiced by scenario-based training with branching.

The course finished with a review of the topics and congratulations.

  • Many of the employees and volunteers enjoyed the content, expressing particular positivity for the ability to practice their skills in the interactive, scenario based sections. There were some learners who had never heard of the terms or experienced any kind of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion training in the past and were grateful for the opportunity to begin to build their awareness and skills in this area.

During monthly staff and volunteer meetings, data from the LMS was used to drive conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion that helped the food bank to better interface with clients and help the community.
