LA Confidential Foodie Expedition (Map #1)

Project Background & Process

A food tourism start-up approached me seeking training for their sales staff, called “concierges.” Each concierge was tasked with helping prospective tourists build itineraries that allowed them to both optimize the tourist’s time and provide them with rich, iconic, and novel dining experiences in the LA area. After discussions with stakeholders, subject matter experts in the tourism and restaurant industry, and prospective clients, a series of interactive maps was decided upon as the main medium to deliver concierge training and enrichment.

Features & Attributes

The 10 interactive maps feature markers showing the relative locations of 5 - 10 notable restaurants. When the learner clicks on a restaurant, they are presented with an introductory video, and then a menu containing 5 sections:

  • Founding: Images and history of the restaurant’s founding & people involved

  • Ambience/Style: description & images of the atmosphere & restaurant design

  • Menu: a general description of the fare, along with a full menu

  • Specialties: a pop up showing names,, images and descriptions of specials

  • Location: a pop-up showing a detailed map, street address & phone number

This is followed by a menu offering videos about Celebrity lore, special aspects, and trivia about the restaurant, ending with an interactive knowledge check and the awarding of a badge.

When all the badges on the map are earned, the learner then completes branching scenarios that allow them to practice taking calls from and creating itineraries based on customer preferences.
